What You Need to Know About Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis affecting people suffering from psoriasis, which refers to the skin condition involving red patches of skin and silvery scales. In most cases, people first develop psoriasis followed by psoriatic arthritis. Sometimes, joint problems can occur before the development of psoriasis. Know more about psoriatic arthritis here:

Psoriasis, also known as psoriasis, is an autoimmune and long-lasting chronic disease in which the skin becomes red and scaly. Although inflammation in the skin is a direct sign of psoriasis, due to this disease, inflammation (internal inflammation and irritation) can also occur in the internal organs and joints. Psoriatic arthritis, or psoriatic arthritis, is an inflammation of the joints that develops in people with psoriasis. The affected joints become swollen and often painful. It is typically seen that people with psoriatic arthritis have a problem with psoriasis for many years before developing symptoms of arthritis.

Since it is a type of arthritis, its signs and symptoms include the following:

  • joint swelling or stiffness
  • muscle pain
  • scaly patches on the skin
  • It also involves small joints of the body such as the joints present in the hands and toes, wrists, ankles and elbows.
  • In some cases, eye diseases also occur, the most common being conjunctivitis and uveitis.
  • It is believed that like psoriasis, the problem of psoriatic arthritis also arises when the body's immune system starts attacking the healthy tissue present in the body. While it is not yet clear what causes these attacks, a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors such as stress, viral infection or injury is thought to play a role.

Depending on the symptoms associated with joint problems or stiffness, the doctor may advise you to undergo some tests and refer the patient to a rheumatologist for further investigation and treatment. Common tests like X-ray, C-reactive protein test and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test are done to know the type of arthritis.

There is no one medicine that works in all cases of arthritis. Therefore, many different types of medicines are tried on the patient before choosing a suitable and effective medicine for the patient. Along with anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic medicines, physical therapy is also prescribed, to help the patient to overcome problems related to movement and joints. Medicines such as corticosteroids, biotech drugs or immunosuppressants may also be prescribed to the patient.

The problem of psoriatic arthritis persists for a long time – it is extremely difficult to get rid of it completely. However, with the help of the right medicines and therapy, the possibility of relapse of the disease in the patient, ie, the possibility of coming back can definitely be overcome. Psoriatic arthritis is a condition that affects 7 to 26 percent of psoriasis patients.
