The Difference Between Dental Veneers and Lumineers

Dental veneers are thin tooth-like covers that stick to the teeth to help achieve a more desirable shape and look. Lumineers, on the other hand, is a type of porcelain veneers that will correct tooth deformities like cracks, gaps, chips, misalignment, discoloration, and more.

Lumineers vs Veneers

In terms of interaction, appearance is always important. One of the factors that affect one's appearance and first impression comes from having a beautiful smile, and the appearance of a person's teeth helps to achieve this smile. Teeth are calcified structures found in the mouths or jaws of many vertebrates, and their main purpose is to break down food. However, teeth are also a very fragile place. This is especially true for people. They may be difficult, but they are not indestructible. Doing things, such as tearing open plastic packaging with teeth, biting nails, grinding hard objects with teeth, and allowing them to be hit by moving objects, will damage the integrity of the teeth and cause them to break. Due to different conditions, some people may have tooth deformities. Others have problems with tooth discoloration caused by drugs and aging. But the advantage is that the modernization of dentistry has paved different ways to solve these problems.

One of the ways for dentists to fix these problems is to use veneers. These veneers are made of a layer of corrective material. The material is placed on the surface of the tooth. This is used to improve the appearance of the teeth or prevent any further damage to the surface of the teeth. There are two different types of materials to make veneers ; these types are composite and dental porcelain. The veneers made of composite materials are placed directly or indirectly by specialists in the dental facility, and then bonded to the teeth with a resin adhesive. The veneers made of dental porcelain can only be manufactured indirectly.

The man who invented and pioneered veneers was one of the dentists based in Charles Pincus, California. In his time, the veneers can fall off in a short time because the denture adhesive is the only thing that holds them. These veneers are used to temporarily change the appearance of the actors' teeth. After Richard J. Simonsen and John R. Calamia began their research, the veneer was improved in 1982. Their research concluded that hydrofluoric acid can be used to carve porcelain, strengthen the bond between composite resin and porcelain, and permanently fix the porcelain veneer on the tooth surface. This was confirmed in an article by Calamia and Horn. Calamia described the technique of using refractory modelling techniques to correctly manufacture and modify the correct arrangement of porcelain veneers, while Horn described the appropriate method of using and placing platinum foil for the manufacture of veneers.

Another way to restore teeth is to use lumineers. Lumineers is a new type of veneer. It is thinner and stronger than the original. Lumineers also offer the same advantages as veneers , but one of the differences between them is that this improved version does not require reshaping the teeth. Therefore, if the individual wants to remove this layer from the tooth, unlike traditional veneers, the original structure of the tooth will be intact. The disadvantage of lumineers is that if there is no tooth preparation, it will feel more bulky than traditional veneers.
