Cavities in teeth are a common problem. Sometimes due to not brushing properly, sometimes due to not maintaining dental hygiene, cavities occur which in addition to damaging the teeth, it becomes harmful to the gums as well. Due to cavities, many types of infections start in the mouth. Even though the cavity may be small, when it grows more, it gives rise to many other problems and sometimes to get rid of it, root canal treatment has to be done.
When it comes to cavities, plaque in the teeth is the main cause. This sticky biofilm of bacteria constantly builds up on your teeth and feeds on the foods you eat and the sugars in the fluids you eat. The bacteria in plaque release acids and the stickiness of plaque keeps these acids in contact with your teeth, which damages teeth through the loss of calcium and phosphate. This process is known as demineralization and can lead to the formation of white spots on the tooth surface. These small openings in the teeth represent the first stage of cavity.
How to prevent cavities
If you are seeing any symptoms of cavity in the teeth, then you should go to the dentist immediately. Your dentist can treat your cavity right away and stop it from growing. Here are some more ways to prevent this.
Fluoride toothpaste
Choose a fluoride toothpaste to prevent cavities. Toothpaste containing fluoride is known to protect against tooth decay and cavity. If you are concerned about the enamel of your teeth, then do brush with this paste twice daily and start brushing after every meal. It is known to remove sugar and starch from teeth which turn into corrosive acids. It also adds an extra layer of protection to the teeth by protecting them from decay and cavities.
Change eating habits
Sometimes our eating habits also become the cause of cavities. Try to have only a limited number of snacks a day and include foods that are good for teeth. Whenever you have a meal or drink a sugary drink other than water, it allows the germs to form acid which reduces the brightness of the teeth and also forms cavities. Brushing after eating anything is a great way to avoid cavity.
